What Are Bunions?

Bunions are a bony, often painful hump at the base of the big toe.

Bunion Symptoms

Some symptoms of a bunion include:

Swelling
Redness
Tenderness to touch
Pain that is constant or pain that comes and goes
Limited movement of the joint or toe

Factors that may contribute to bunions include:

Geneticsis the main contributing factor of bunion formation however certain types of arthritis, trauma, ill-fitting shoes and foot structure can also lead to bunions.

Treatment Options

Treatment for bunions includes wider shoes, padding and custom orthotics. It should be noted that these modalities may slow down this progression however in many cases surgery may be the only way to correct the bunion deformity.
